Stillness Between Trees
Stillness Between Trees
The artist typically begins a series by capturing the landscape in charcoal, before developing these studies into oil paintings and larger works. Stillness Between Trees evolved from one such charcoal study, which is also included in this collection. Drawn to the quiet, contemplative quality of the landscape, the artist aimed to retain that sense of calm as the work developed into paint.
Alexandra Oliver is a Suffolk-based landscape artist whose practice is grounded in a deep connection to place. Rooted in the Suffolk landscape, Oliver’s work explores the vitality of the natural world, particularly woodland environments. She captures her surroundings initially through charcoal, pastel and acrylic, and responds directly to the shifting light and atmosphere present in nature. These studies are later developed into oil paintings on canvas, using layers of paint to build depth and luminosity, and enrich the surface with a subtle vibrancy.
Informed, although not confined, by a deep engagement with British landscape painting, her work reconsiders Romantic traditions through a contemporary lens, and creates an immersive encounter for the viewer by drawing them into the living landscape.
